Buchi Atuonwu Bwai, popularly known as Buchi, is a Nigerian reggae gospel artist who has been a shining star in the gospel music scene for several years. Born on June 24th, 1963, in Kaduna, Nigeria, to parents of Abia State origin, Buchi had his early education in Enugu, where he attended Methodist College, Uzuakoli, and Federal Government College, Enugu.
Buchi proceeded to the University of Lagos in 1983 to study English Language and Literary Studies, where he obtained a BA in 1986, an MA in 1988, and later the same year took up an appointment to lecture at the same institution alongside a PhD program. He remained at the Department of English until 1994 when he yielded to the higher calling to propagate the gospel of Jesus through writing and singing in the reggae genre.
While in the university, his casual involvement in black activism through a reggae club became intense after listening to Oliver Thambo and the officials of ANC (African National Congress) from South Africa, during the club’s exhibition on “Apartheid in South Africa.” Having studied the black activist literature of Dennis Bruts, Professor Wole Soyinka, Muta Baruka, and the likes, his preoccupation with reggae music as an “outcry against oppression” became deeper. Little wonder he also became involved in one of the campus confraternities which at the time prided themselves as anti-oppression movements.
This preoccupation with reggae music took a new turn when his friend Ras Kimono invited him to join the team of deejays on the Floating Bukka – a reggae nightclub situated on a docked vessel on the Marina, Lagos Island. Buchi is married to Jane, and they have four children together.
Buchi’s career in music began when he started working as a disc jockey in nightclubs. However, he later gave his life to Christ and became a member of the choir at Christ Embassy Church in 1992. His debut album, These Days, was released in 1999 and was a huge success, making him one of the most sought-after gospel reggae artists in Nigeria.
Buchi has since gone on to release two more albums, So Beautiful (2002) and What a Life (2005), which have all been well-received by music lovers worldwide. As a result, he has ministered in church concerts, including Reinhard Bonnke’s stadium-packed outreaches.
Buchi has won numerous awards, including the prestigious AMEN Award for Best in Gospel Category in 1999, as well as Faith, POMP, and TOMA Awards for Best Artiste, Reggae Artiste, and Gospel Album of the year variously.
Buchi is active on various social media platforms, including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. His social media presence allows him to connect with his fans worldwide and share his music, thoughts, and ideas with them.
Aside from his music career, Buchi is also an author. He has written several books, including “The Future of Nigeria” and “Nigeria and the Redemption of Africa.”
Buchi’s net worth is currently unknown, but he is believed to be one of the wealthiest gospel musicians in Nigeria.
