Fiokee Biography

Ifiok Effanga, professionally known as Fiokee, is a Nigerian guitarist born on January 21st, 1982, in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. He is the fourth child in a family of six and learned to play the guitar from a taxi cab driver.

He was also part of his church choir and played in churches while studying at the Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun, Delta State.

Fiokee Career

Fiokee is known for his unique blend of contemporary highlife and Afrobeats, with occasional forays into the blues.

He is famous for his trebly guitar solos that often closely follow the main melodic theme and use his signature trebly S-type guitar.

He has collaborated with artists such as Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Patoranking, Reekado Banks, Adekunle Gold, Flavour, Simi, and Kiss Daniel, among others. In 2008, he won a reality television music competition show called Star Quest as part of a group called Diamonds.

In 2016, he started his own record label called Fiokee Records and released a 14-track album called MAN, the first compilation sound piece from an African guitarist with other artists.

Fiokee Achievements

With over two decades of experience in the African showbiz industry, Fiokee has become a pioneer in the instrumental music scene across Africa.

He has impacted the discographies of several A-list artists and has thrived as one of the most progressive sound-shapers of his generation.

Fiokee’s story is a grass-to-grass tale; having hustled for three years after secondary school, he saved up to buy his first guitar and stumbled upon a cabbie driver who taught him how to play every night.

An interview with Fiokee

As a reporter spoke with Fiokee, they were amazed by the lightweight nature of his vocals and his youthful looks, despite being over 40 years old.

When asked about his music, Fiokee said he was interested in incorporating Afro-jazz into his playing style, which includes rapid thrills, legato, and frequent octave moves. Fiokee is truly a talented musician and continues to inspire others with his story and music.

Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Fiokee. You recently released your new project, and it’s already receiving a lot of positive attention. How are you feeling about it?

Fiokee: I’m feeling great! This project is a big one for me, and I’m proud to be the first guitarist to release this type of album, not just in Nigeria but also in South America, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

Interviewer: That’s amazing. Can you tell us why you chose to release it in January?

Fiokee: I decided to drop it in January 2022 as a gift for my 40th birthday. I’ve been in the industry for 14 years now, since 2008, and I feel like it’s time for me to release my own album. Plus, starting the year off with this project was a great way to kick off the year.

Interviewer: Your discography has influenced many musicians. What has influenced your own music?

Fiokee: I wanted to challenge the notion that you have to sign with a label in order to be recognized. I’ve been able to create an industry where people appreciate large instruments, and I wanted to use the guitar to make my mark.

I wanted to create pure instrumental music, which was popular in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but I wanted to make it my own by solely focusing on the guitar.

Interviewer: Can you tell us about when you first picked up a guitar?

Fiokee: I’ve always loved music, and I also love the keyboard. But when I was younger, I was part of a children’s choir, and I became familiar with translating songs into music.

When I finished high school, I started working in my dad’s shop and saving up money to rent a guitar. Eventually, I met a taxi driver who was also a guitarist, and I began taking lessons from him.

I fell in love with the guitar and continued to learn, playing in churches and volunteering.

Interviewer: That’s a very inspiring journey. What kept you going during that time?

Fiokee: My passion for music kept me going. I was struggling financially, but playing the guitar gave me a sense of purpose and kept me going through the difficult times. I was determined to make a name for myself and create music that people would love and appreciate.
