Joeboy Biography
Nigerian singer and composer Joseph Akinwale Akinferiwa-Donus, better known by his stage name Joeboy, was born in 1993 and graduated from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Mr. and Mrs. Akinfenwa were good musicians, and his father and older brother sang in choirs when they were younger. His father played the keyboard in the band, and his brother sang in the band.
His childhood was spent in the City of Lagos with his brothers. Joeboy’s interest in music grew when he could watch his musically talented father and sister at work. This passion was fueled even more by listening to songs by African and Western artists with different sounds, from pop to soul to R&B to dancehall to reggae to afrobeats. In particular, it was the music that sparked this interest.
Joeboy Career
At 16, he started making music professionally. 9ice and ID Cabasa influenced him, two rappers he used to hang out with in the studio. At age 17, he made his first record, Gbeseyin, which was an Afrobeat song. In 2017, he put out a cover of Shape of You by Ed Sheeran, which got a lot of views in Nigeria and around the world. Mr. Eazi of emPawa Africa heard how great Joeboy’s voice was, and he became the first artist that Mr. Eazi sponsored through his charity, emPawa Africa. Joeboy could record the song Faaji with the help of emPawa Africa and Mr. Eazi, which did very well. The artist put out a love song called “Baby” in March 2019. In Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya, the song was in the top 10 on the Apple Music charts.
