John Ikponwosa Ighodaro, known professionally as Johnny Drille, was born on July 5th, 1990, in Edo State, Nigeria. He was born into a Christian family of seven, where his father is a clergyman and his mother is a school principal.
Johnny began singing in his father’s church at a young age and later joined the children’s choir. He also played the keyboard and was part of a group called Soul Awakening Signs with his sister.
In 2006, he began teaching himself music production and recording cassette tapes. He attended primary and secondary school in Edo State and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and literature from the University of Benin in 2012.
Johnny Drille’s Career
Johnny Drille started his music career by participating in the MTN Project Fame Academy in 2013, which helped him gain experience in the music industry. However, it was his cover of Di’ja’s “Aww” in February 2015 that brought him to the spotlight.
This caught the attention of Mavin Records’ boss, Don Jazzy, who reached out to him and even followed him on Twitter.
In June of that same year, Johnny released his first song, “Love Don’t Lie,” a Christian country/folk song. He later released “Wait for Me,” which went viral.
He collaborated with Niniola, and they released a hit single titled “Start All Over” in 2016. He also collaborated with Simi, and they released a song titled “Hallelujah” in 2018. Johnny Drille’s debut album, “Before We Fall Asleep,” was released on December 3rd, 2021.
