Oxlade, whose real name is Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, is a famous Nigerian musician who has collaborated with artists like Blaqbonez, Fireboy DML, Ice Prince, and more. Oxlade’s unique take on Afro Fusion has helped him rise to prominence in Nigeria’s music scene and win him fans across the country and the continent.
He spent his entire childhood in the Lagos suburb of Surulere. After losing his mother at an early age, he was raised by his father and grandmother. He started leading the children’s chorus at his church when he was only ten years old. Later on, though, he abandoned gospel for secular music, a decision that was heavily criticized by his uncles and father.
Despite their warnings, he pursued a career in secular music. After applying to several schools, he decided on Lagos State University (LASU) because of its history and international relations programs. After two years, however, he decided to abandon his studies in favor of a career in music. Oxlade comes from a long line of professors. He attended Lagos State University, where his father taught.
Although Oxlade is more known for his secular tunes, he actually got his start as a musician singing gospel. When he was at the age of ten, he led the children’s chorus at his church. He now joins the ranks of other well-known Nigerian musicians whose careers got their starts in religious settings. Many years later, Oxlade abandoned gospel for secular music, a decision that was widely unpopular with his relatives.
His dad and uncles on mom’s side were so down on the decision that they stopped being there for him emotionally. And thus, Oxlade left his studies at Lagos State University to focus on his professional development. He had been studying for a degree in History and International Relations before he left school. As soon as Blaqbonez heard one of the singer’s songs, he asked to collaborate with him. The duo collaborated on and released the smash hit single “Mamiwota.” In the annals of Oxlade’s meteoric ascension to the top of the Nigerian and international music scene, this event is now considered a watershed moment.
Oxlade is single right now. He has said that before he became famous, he broke up with a girl he was in love with. It looks like he was seeing her when her boyfriend wasn’t around. He said, “We knew it was going to crash, but we were still very hopeful.” She had a boyfriend, and you know how the best things are the ones that are against the rules? I’ll tell you this, my brother: they are the best. It was more of a situationship, but I put time and effort into it.
