Ruger was born into Mr. and Mrs. Olayinka’s family. He was given the name Michael Adebayo Olayinka by his parents. Adebayo is his authentic Nigerian name. He was born and raised in a southwestern state, and is of Yoruba ancestry.

He and his family originally hail from Lagos State, where he was born and raised. He grew up in a Christian home and went to church with his family on a consistent basis. It was in church where he first started to share his musical gifts with others. When he was a teenager, he felt called to use his musical abilities in God’s service by singing in the church choir.

He grew up in Lagos, the country’s de facto capital. It was his early exposure to various musical styles that sparked his lifelong passion for the arts. His whole family has always been quite into music, so it wasn’t surprising. In light of this, he resolved to follow his dream of becoming a musician, and his loved ones encouraged him. Ruger began his journey to stardom in the music industry at a young age. When he was a teenager, he started writing lyrics for the school band’s performances. At the time, he was known by the stage name “Mikki Drey.”

D’Prince found him in 2021 and gave him the name “Ruger.” After signing a record deal with D’Prince’s “Jonzing world record,” Ruger made his theatrical entrance. In January of 2021, D’Prince announced that he had signed Ruger to a joint venture between Sony Music Entertainment UK and Columbia Records’ Jonzing World label.

After the success of “One Shirt” by D’Prince and Rema, he gave Ruger his public debut. A year later, on February 19, 2021, the singer behind “Dior” dropped the self-titled single off of his debut EP, PANDEMIC.

After the release of his first EP and the subsequent success of the song “Bounce,” Ruger quickly rose to prominence in the music industry. “Bounce,” the EP’s lead single, peaked at #39 on Apple Music’s Top 50 chart and #15 on the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart, becoming a key hit in both countries.

Lyrically and musically, Ruger strikes a nice mix between Reggae and Afrobeat, with an Afro-Pop flavor that includes dancehall influences.
